Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the impairment of the area responsible for sharp sight, called the macula, which leads to the gradual impairment of eyesight. At an advanced stage, carrying out tasks requiring sharp sight (reading, recognising faces) becomes hard or even impossible. The symptoms of the disease usually emerge above the age of 50, but the harmful processes in the eye may start as early as a decade beforehand. Although the disease itself cannot be cured, the impairment can be slowed and stopped if diagnosed early. You can check the symptoms of the disease with a simple, so-called Amsler-test.
Using the Amsler-test
Make the test in a well-lit place. Place the grid in a distance of 30-40 cm from your eye. If you make the test on your computer, keep the same distance. If you wear glasses for reading, put them on for the time of the test.
Cover one of your eyes and focus on the central dot in a way that you can see the whole grid. Now test your other eye too.
Check whether you see irregular lines, waving lines, distortions or missing areas on the grid!
In case you observe distortions, wavy lines or see a blurred area, see an eye specialist as soon as possible for further tests! It is a useful help for the specialist if you draw round the area affected on the printed image.
